Frequently Asked Questions About First 30 Group’s
Active Shooter Incident Safety Training Workshop
Why does our business need Active Shooter Incident safety training?
As the threat of attacks continues to rise, it’s critical to be prepared. Studies have shown a disturbing upward trend in Active Shooter Incidents (ASIs). Shockingly, the FBI has documented 484 ASIs over the past 23 years, with 2021 experiencing a record high of over one occurrence per week.2, 3, 4, 5
According to FEMA’s 2023 National Preparedness Report, ASIs are one of the top five most challenging threats facing the nation.6
Businesses are particularly vulnerable to these attacks, with over half of ASIs occurring in locations such as business offices, storefronts, and other commercial settings.7
According to a video produced by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, “An analysis of over 400 active shooter events revealed that one in four of those cases resulted in a civil suit. This ratio increased when we looked at schools, private businesses, and public facilities.”8
The possibility of an ASI is a significant source of stress for many people in the United States, with 79% of adults experiencing anxiety, according to a survey commissioned by the American Psychological Association. Fearful of the unknown, many adults report changing their behaviors to avoid such situations.
The First 30 Group Active Shooter Incident Safety Training workshop was developed to equip businesses with the necessary knowledge and outlook to reduce the risks related to mass violence in the workplace. Our objective is to improve overall safety, while minimizing liability and employee anxiety.
How is your ASI training effective?
Our training adheres to nationally recognized best practices and aligns with the federal government’s Run, Hide, Fight framework.9
Our training is based on the principle of gradual learning, starting with the basics, and moving towards proficiency. Our training incorporates engaging classroom discussions and interactive group exercises. Using maps and chips, our tabletop exercises resemble board games frequently used by public safety agencies and the United States military. These exercises are a critical component of the course, allowing students to put their newly acquired skills and emergency decision-making abilities into practice. Group discussions are encouraged in a low-stress, enjoyable, and productive learning environment.
Our team possesses valuable firsthand experience responding to and surviving mass attacks. This level of expertise and insight is what makes our training program the best available in the country.
How was your ASI training developed?
First 30 Group’s program was developed by founder Greg Pass, a retired police lieutenant from the Washington, D.C. National Capital Region. In addition to his robust ASI training and preparedness background, Greg conducted extensive research.
To gain meaningful insights, we examined over 700 attacks from across the globe, sourcing data from multiple outlets, such as police reports, after-action reports, witness testimonies, scientific studies, inquests, and court documents. Additionally, we interviewed 25 ASI survivors, who shared their valuable advice and knowledge gained from their experiences.
Our program has been meticulously reviewed and refined by a team of highly qualified law enforcement professionals. But we didn’t stop there. We also enlisted the help of civilians who survived ASIs to provide their real-world perspectives and make valuable recommendations.
Will your ASI training be stressful for our employees?
Not at all. First 30 Group’s program provides a comprehensive and stress-free learning experience, which is essential for effective training.
While it’s true that realistic scenarios depicting violence have merit in certain training environments, it’s important to avoid exposing your staff to high-stress situations prematurely, as this can lead to unnecessary trauma and a poor learning experience. A solid foundation is needed before exposure to reality-based training. For example, police academy recruits receive several weeks of training prior to exposure to similar high-stress scenarios.
Does your ASI training teach hands-on self-defense tactics?
No. To learn effective self-defense tactics, a student must undergo several months of consistent hands-on practice and repetition. It would be misleading to advertise this kind of training in a four-hour block of instruction.
How many people can you train in each workshop and where is it conducted?
We can accommodate up to 40 people per class. If you have a group of more than 40, contact us to discuss various options.
We hold our ASI safety training workshop at your place of business. We’ll review our on-site needs during your initial consultation.
